It is one thing to hope. To wish. To dream.
It is another thing to do.
It is an entirely different animal when you ensure your future. Ensuring your future is doing everything in your power to get the desired outcome.
Let me give you an example:
I currently have a job that is possibly a series of 3 month contracts. If you do baseline or better – congratulations! You get to keep your job.
2nd prize is your fired.
A coworker of mine who got hired only a week after me constantly worried,”I hope our contracts get extended” He would say. In the same breath, he would lament “I think I’m burnt out in IT” (Having done it for 8 years, I could see where he was coming from.)
He would come into work tired, unshaven and generally unkempt. His wardrobe was right at the very bottom of casual. 1 month in, he was asking if our contracts were getting extended. He kept wondering and worrying.
I kept working.
His lack of enthusiasm started to show more and more. He started calling in once a week. After 3 weeks, the higher-ups had had enough. He was terminated immediately.
All that hoping, wishing and dreaming got him nowhere. He forgot the essentials of a day job.
A)Show up on time.
B)Do your work.
He didn’t even make it the full 3 months, yet he was asking about an extension!
With his work ethic, I would be constantly in fear of my job too.
But see, I don’t worry if my contract will get extended. I work for a $5 Billion company. I think they can afford me.
So it’s not an issue of money.
It is an issue of me. So that’s what I focus on.
I try to learn something new. I try to make myself more of an asset to the team.
What they decide is out of my control.
He hoped for his future.
I am ensuring mine.
This same principle can be applied almost anywhere.
Take women for example.
If you do everything in your power to be stronger, smarter, better paid and better dressed than the average man and she still doesn’t like you, that’s an issue that she has.
You’ve done everything in your power.
Maybe you’re just not her type.
In bodybuilding – some people are naturally gifted.
I’ve had to push the limits of every muscle in my body and the contents of my stomach.
And I’m not even 200lbs at 6’0″ !
I know people who are that big and don’t lift a single weight.
But that doesn’t matter.
What matters is what I can do with what I was given.
Some people are born rich.
But guess what? His bank account is not mine, nor will it ever be.
I cannot buy a house with his money. So what does it matter?
What does matter?
The lessons he has learned and how it applies to my finances. That is the money that most directly effects me.
Too many people focus on what is out of their control.
What you need to do is double down on what is in your control and don’t let it out of your sight.
THAT is how you ensure your future.
